What skills does an IT tester need?

In order to get a job as an IT tester specialist, you need to have certain skills and abilities. You should know at least one programming language, such as Java, Python or C#. Because your job won’t just be to click through a website, software or app. In order to find bugs and flaws, you need to be able to analyze the code so that you can then find the cause of the problem.

You will also need knowledge of SQL and XML, good communication and organizational skills, analytical thinking, attention to detail and, last but not least, advanced knowledge of German at least at B2 level in both written and verbal. Being able to speak both English and German is, of course, also a big plus for your potential employer.

If you’re just starting out in IT, don’t be discouraged. In junior positions, you need a basic knowledge of programming, a high school or university education and, above all, a willingness to learn. Other skills you will learn on the job.

Certificates can increase your value on the labour market

Although the job of a software tester doesn’t require a certificate, getting one can help you significantly on your way to a new job as an IT tester. There are two main certifications:

• ISTQB (International Software Testing Qualifications Board)
• CSTE (Certified Software Testing Engineer)

ISTQB certification is one of the most well-known certifications in the field of software application testing. In each country, it is covered by the country’s certification authority, which makes International ISTQB certificate for software testing accepted also abroad.

Unlike the ISTQB certification, which you can get without previous IT experience, the CSTE certification often requires a bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience or six years of experience without a degree to qualify for the test. It will then assess your understanding of software testing skills, quality control and knowledge of the IT profession.

A well-written CV can do wonders

First impressions are extremely important, so if you’re applying for any job, remember that your CV is the first thing your potential employer will see. So make sure you have interesting skills and abilities on your CV that will set you apart from the competition. Always update your CV before responding to an offer and make sure it includes your current experience, skills and language skills. It is also important that it is visually nice, also the photo you choose is important and make sure that you only include work experience and knowledge relevant to the specific position you are applying for.

If you don’t have experience as an IT tester, don’t be afraid to mention related projects, training, certifications or courses you’ve taken. The willingness to learn and progress is also an extremely important factor for employers to look for in their future employees. At the same time, junior positions only require the basics, so don’t be put off by the requirements and job description.
